Reed is not currently included in Hertfordshire County Council’s programme of formal consultations on the introduction of 20 mph speed limits, but County Councillor Ruth Brown says she is seeking to persuade council officers to add the village to the list.
Speaking at the meeting of Reed Parish Council on 1 July, Cllr Brown said she would be making the case for Reed, particularly in the light of the Parish Council’s recent household survey, which found that 89% of responding households supported the introduction of a 20 mph speed limit on residential roads.
The County Council is currently consulting on 20 mph schemes in Barkway, Barley and Royston. Cllr Brown explained that some other locations had not been taken forward because they had not demonstrated sufficient local support.
During the discussion, parish councillors noted that, apart from the A10, Reed’s roads are largely village lanes that would be well suited to a 20 mph limit. Councillors also referred to continuing concerns about speeding traffic, particularly at times when children are being dropped off at or collected from the village school.
Although no decision has yet been made on whether Reed will be included in the programme, the Parish Council’s survey results will form part of the case being put forward for the village.
