Reed Choir

Reed Choir was formed in the summer of 2014 to sing a choral evensong to conclude a flower festival that had been held in St Mary’s Church. Since then, we have contributed to services held in the churches across our benefice (St Mary’s Reed, St Andrew’s Buckland, St Margaret of Antioch, Barley and St Mary Magdelene in Barkway). Now at over 30 members strong, drawn from Reed, Royston, Barley, Barkway, Buckland and further afield, the choir includes members aged from 8 to 80+ years old, and we are continuing to grow. We mark our 10th anniversary during 2024 under our music director, John Haselden, who was appointed in January in succession to Helen Holliday. Supported by our accompanist Paul Harrison, the Choir continues to thrive, among other things being invited to sing Evensong at St Albans Cathedral (twice), and at Ely Cathedral. Reed Choir predominantly sings Church of England choral music, written by composers such as Mozart, Rutter, Stainer, to name but a few. However, we have also learned and performed secular pieces by a range of composers such as Elton John, Labi Siffre, Arthur Sullivan and many others for fundraising concerts in Royston and Reed. We sing in four voice parts (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) and are always very keen to welcome new members who love to sing. No formal experience is required and we don’t audition anyone. Only enthusiasm and a willingness to take part is required. We normally rehearse on the first Sunday of the month at 4pm in St Mary’s Church, Reed. If you are interested in finding out more or joining us, please contact Liz Kershaw on lizkershaw@hotmail.co.uk for further information.
